Stroke recovery at home

What is a stroke?
A stoke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain is blocked or ruptures, resulting in the death of brain tissue. The body functions controlled by the injured brain tissues are impaired or stop functioning.

How is it treated?
The effects of stroke vary greatly. Depending on type and severity, doctors treat stroke with a combination of hospital care, surgery, medication, rehabilitation, and in most cases, follow up care at home.

Steps in Stroke Recovery
1. Determine the type and cause.
Having a stroke is a major risk factor for having another one. While the patient is in the hospital, the staff determines the type of stroke. Knowing the cause helps reduce the risk of another stroke.

2. Assess damage.
The hospital treatment team will assess the damage caused by the stroke. They will also stabilize the patient's medical condition.

3. Develop a plan for rehabilitation.
Doctors usually prescribe a combination of medication and therapy for stroke victims and often recommend a home care team to help patients and their families through the recovery process.

4. Discharge from hospital.
Returning home after a stroke can be challenging for both patient and family. Even before the patient leaves the hospital, the Sta-home team can help make the transition back home a smooth one.
